President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed sorrow over the killing of soldiers of the 29 Task Force Brigade, Operation HADIN KAI, following a terrorist attack on their base in Benisheikh, Borno State.
The President, in a statement on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described the fallen troops as “unforgettable heroes”.
He urged Nigerians and the media to rally behind the Armed Forces in their ongoing battle against insurgency and banditry.
The Defence Headquarters confirmed that the attack occurred in the early hours of Thursday, April 9, 2026, resulting in multiple casualties among the troops.
President Tinubu extending his condolences to the military leadership, families of the deceased soldiers, as well as the government and people of Borno State, urged them to remain steadfast despite the tragic loss.
He also paid tribute to the courage of the soldiers, noting that they fought bravely to repel the attackers and prevent insurgents from overrunning the communities under their protection.
“From the reports I have received, our armed forces have been conducting sustained, intense land and air offensives against the insurgents, neutralising many of their fighters and commanders. The insurgents’ counterattack is a sign of desperation,” the President said.
He specifically commiserated with families of the slain troops led by Brigadier-General Oseni Omoh Braimah, assuring that their sacrifices would not be forgotten.
“The government will never forget their sacrifices. Their sacrifices will not be in vain. Because of the courage and dedication of our troops on the frontline, our resolve to defeat terrorism and all forms of violence across Nigeria is stronger than ever,” Tinubu stated.
The President charged the Armed Forces not to be discouraged by the attack, urging them to remain resolute and continue serving with honour and patriotism.
He said, “I urge the Military High Command and our troops in all theatres of operation: Do not lose heart, do not be weary, do not be discouraged. Our officers and men should continue to serve with honour, courage, and patriotism. The government will always stand by the Armed Forces, provide more of the equipment needed and ensure the welfare of all who risk their lives for our safety.”
Tinubu appealed to Nigerians and the media to avoid narratives that undermine the morale of troops, insisting that the nation must stand united in support of the military.
“We should desist from celebrating or condoning the attacks against our troops. These soldiers are our heroes; unforgettable and irreplaceable,” he said.
Reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to restoring peace, President Tinubu assured that collaboration with the Borno State Government would continue until total victory over terrorism is achieved.
