The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has opened the Preliminary Register of Voters for the 2027 general election on its online platform following public concerns over access to the register, introducing an additional layer of scrutiny ahead of the certification of the final voters’ list on December 15, 2026.
Mallam Mohammed Kudu Haruna, Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC) of INEC, on Monday in a statement said the online publication was intended to complement the physical exercise and facilitate wider public access.
The decision comes after the commission conducted a nationwide physical display of the register from October 9 to 15, giving registered voters seven days to inspect their particulars and submit claims and objections under the Electoral Act, 2026.
By extending access to the same register online, INEC is responding to concerns from Nigerians and other stakeholders who called for a more accessible means of checking voters’ records beyond the physical display at Registration Areas.
The commission said the preliminary register is now available through its dedicated portal, https://display.inecnigeria.org, while the processing of claims and objections arising from the physical exercise continues.
The move places greater emphasis on public scrutiny of the voters’ register at a critical stage in preparations for the 2027 elections, when the accuracy of voter records will be central to the credibility of the electoral process.
The commission conducted the preliminary register display across Registration Areas nationwide between October 9 and 15, in line with Section 19 of the Electoral Act, 2026.
The exercise was designed to allow registered voters to verify their particulars and raise claims or objections where necessary.
However, concerns subsequently emerged over the desirability of providing online access to the register, with Nigerians and electoral stakeholders seeking a more convenient way to examine the records.
“The Commission has taken note of the concerns expressed by Nigerians and other stakeholders regarding the desirability of making the Register accessible through its online platform in addition to the physical display already conducted.
“Accordingly, and in furtherance of its commitment to transparency, accessibility and public confidence in the electoral process, the Commission has decided to make available on its online platform https://display.inecnigeria.org the same Preliminary Register of Voters earlier displayed at the Registration Areas.
“This additional measure complements the physical display already undertaken and is intended to facilitate wider public access to the Register. Meanwhile, the Commission continues to process claims and objections arising from the exercise in accordance with the Electoral Act, 2026, preparatory to the certification and publication of the Final Register of Voters on 15th December 2026,” Haruna said.
