The Alfred Cecilia Tessy Foundation, a non-governmental organisation, has supported Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) with bags of rice, toiletries, and education sponsorship as part of activities marking the 2025 Christmas celebration.
Mr Lawrence Omonade, the Executive Director of the foundation, during an outreach held in Gwagwalada, said the education sponsorship initiative was designed to encourage access to learning for pupils and students living with disabilities.
Omonade said the gesture formed part of deliberate efforts by the foundation to promote social inclusion, restore hope among vulnerable groups, and ensure that persons with disabilities felt valued and accepted within society.
“This end of year party is for our brothers and sisters with disabilities from communities in Zuba, Karamajiji, and Gwagwalada to give them a sense of belonging as we celebrate this Christmas
“Education remains a core focus of our interventions, and that is why we have included scholarships for 50 pupils and 50 students in the FCT,” he said.
Omonade urged persons with disabilities to embrace acts of kindness from other members of society and avoid self-discrimination, noting that the Christmas season was a period of unity, celebration, and shared humanity.
Mr Daniel Bassey, the Project and Programme Manager of the foundation, said the Christmas packages, which included cash donations, were intended to ease the economic burdens faced by persons with disabilities.
“We want them to know that they are loved, respected, honoured, and very much valued as part of the society, irrespective of their impairments or disability status,” he said.
In his remarks, the Chaplain of the University of Abuja Catholic Community, Rev. Fr Bernard Anthony commended the foundation for reaching out to those he described as “the poor of the poor” within society.
He said the initiative was impactful and prayed for the sustenance of the support, expressing hope that such gestures would continue to touch the lives of persons with disabilities across communities positively.
Anthony also offered prayers for the organisers and beneficiaries while describing the outreach as a blessing and a true reflection of the love, compassion, and generosity that defined the spirit of Christmas.
Mrs Jummai Sani, a beneficiary of the foundation’s Christmas gesture, expressed appreciation to the group and prayed for increased resources to enable the organisation to sustain and expand its humanitarian interventions.
