The Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, Engineer Farouk Ahmed, has resigned from office.
The resignation was confirmed on Wednesday, paving the way for a change in leadership at the petroleum sector regulator established under the Petroleum Industry Act.
Ahmed was appointed in 2021 by former President Muhammadu Buhari following the implementation of the PIA, which split regulatory oversight of the oil and gas industry into upstream, midstream and downstream segments.
His exit comes amid a wider reshuffling of leadership in the sector.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has since written to the Senate, requesting the confirmation of Engineer Saidu Aliyu Mohammed as the new Chief Executive Officer of the authority.
A statement issued by the President’s media aide, Bayo Onanuga, said the nomination was forwarded for expedited consideration by the upper chamber.
Ahmed’s tenure at the NMDPRA was marked by regulatory reforms aimed at improving efficiency and transparency in the midstream and downstream petroleum operations.
The Senate is expected to screen the nominee in the coming days as part of the constitutional confirmation process.
