The Ogun state police command has clarified that TikTok user Mirabel, who claimed she was raped in her residence, has not been arrested but receiving medical care at a hospital.
The update was provided to TheCable Lifestyle on Thursday by Oluseyi Babaseyi, the command’s public relations officer.
Mirabel sparked widespread concern after posting a series of videos online detailing the alleged assault that occurred in her home on February 15.
In an earlier statement, the Lagos DSVA had acknowledged the case and revealed it was working to reach the young woman.
In a follow-up statement released on Wednesday, the agency confirmed that all relevant information had been passed on to the appropriate authorities in Ogun for investigation, since the case wasn’t within its legal scope.
However, the situation became muddled when a narrative began circulating on social media claiming Mirabel had been arrested by the Ogun state police.
The posts alleged that investigators found her story to be false, citing a lack of evidence such as signs of forced entry or corroborating witness statements from neighbours.
“Ogun State Police have arrested TikTok user Mirabel following investigations into her viral claims of being raped, cut with a blade, and forced to drink poison by an unknown man,” one of the post reads.
“Her neighbors reported no signs of break-in, no screams, and stated she appeared normal when leaving with a man. Phone records and text messages did not support her version of events.
“She gave inconsistent statements and refused full medical/forensic examination offered by authorities and NGOs.
“Police confirmed she was detained today for providing false information, wasting police resources, and attempting to pervert the course of justice.
“Her TikTok account is now private, and several videos have been deleted. Some donors are demanding refunds.
“Investigation ongoing. False allegations undermine real victims and will be treated seriously.”
According to police spokesperson Babaseyi, Mirabel was never taken into custody. Instead, she voluntarily came to the police station to report her case.
The police spokesperson explained that due to her condition, a formal interrogation was not possible. He added that she remains under medical supervision.
“That is false. She was not arrested. She came to report her case at the police station. After establishing communication with her, she was taken to the hospital so that she can get admitted,” the PPRO said.
“She is not really stable as expected. She was taken to the hospital and currently undergoing treatment.
“The police did not arrest her. She is not stable for us to question her. That is the situation of things.”
