President Bola Tinubu has mourned the passing of former Chairman of United Bank for Africa, Chief Israel Ogbue, who died at the age of 99.
The President described the late banker as a principled leader who served the nation and the financial sector with dignity.
Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.
Ogbue, who had a distinguished career in the Federal Civil Service, the National Insurance Corporation and NAL Merchant Bank, joined UBA as a non-executive director in 2005.
He was appointed Chairman of the bank in 2011 and served on the board until 2013, a period widely regarded as critical in the institution’s transformation.
The President noted that Ogbue provided steady and strategic leadership, helping to reposition the bank during a pivotal phase in its growth.
The late elder statesman was also the father of Dr Awele Elumelu, wife of UBA Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu.
Tinubu extended his condolences to the Elumelu family and the extended Ogbue family, praying for strength and comfort in this difficult time.
He also sympathised with the board, management and staff of UBA over the loss of their former chairman.
The President acknowledged the glowing tributes that have trailed Ogbue’s death, describing him as a devoted family man, committed public servant and a humble Christian who dedicated his time and resources to the service of the church, the poor and the vulnerable.
Tinubu prayed that Almighty God would grant the departed patriarch eternal rest and uphold his family in the days ahead.
