President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of his administration to sustainable road infrastructure as a catalyst for Nigeria’s socio-economic development.
He said that quality, durability, and climate-resilient roads remain central to his Renewed Hope Agenda.
President Tinubu, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, at the Road Summit 2026 with the theme, “Sustainable Road Infrastructure for National Growth” said that the summit’s theme is timely and strategic, coming at a period when Nigeria’s road network faces immense pressure from rapid population growth, urbanisation, increasing traffic volumes, overloading, climate-induced stress, and persistent flooding.
“The SGF, in highlighting the key interventions of the Tinubu administration, underscored the unprecedented investments in road infrastructure, characterised by engineering excellence, long-term value, and climate resilience.
“Notable flagship projects include the 780-kilometre Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, a transformative corridor poised to unlock the blue economy, enhance coastal connectivity, and catalyse tourism, trade, and industrial development. Additionally, the SGF spotlighted the Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway, a landmark 1,068-kilometre North-South corridor designed to unlock new economic frontiers and foster national integration,” Dewan Nengak Goshit, Assistant Chief Information Officer, said in a statement in Abuja.
In his remarks, the Minister of Works, Senator David Nweze Umahi, represented by the Minister of State for Works, Barrister Bello Muhammad Goronyo, said that the administration is expediting legacy road projects, prioritising vital economic corridors, and moving away from fragmented annual interventions toward more strategic, long-term infrastructure planning.
He added that The Federal Government is committed to adopting modern construction standards and innovative technologies; transition to technology-driven, climate-responsive, and data-based maintenance systems; and building climate resilience and local capacity through durable materials and empowerment of indigenous contractors.
In his welcome remarks, Dr. Chukwuemeka Agbasi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA), highlighted the pivotal role of the President’s infrastructure agenda in empowering key agencies to effectively discharge their mandates, particularly in the realm of federal road asset maintenance and preservation.
Dr. Agbasi emphasised that sustainable road infrastructure entails not only the construction of new roads but also the judicious management of existing ones, necessitating a paradigm shift from reactive, short-term interventions to proactive, long-term approaches underpinned by data-driven decision-making, resilient design standards, predictable maintenance funding, and robust institutional coordination.
The Road Summit 2026 was organised by FERMA with the purpose of shaping the future of Nigerian road infrastructure through expert, stakeholder, and public-private partnerships with the goal of addressing road maintenance and development needs of the country.
