A former governorship candidate in Zamfara State, Dr. Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately sack the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle.
In a release on Thursday, Shinkafi also hailed the appointment of General Christopher Musa (Retd), as the new Minister of Defence, adding that he is the right man for the job.
According to him, the choice of Gen. Musa demonstrates President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to crushing terrorism and armed bandits in the country.
He also called on the President to sack the former Governor of Zamfara State, Matawalle, and scrap the Ministry of State for Defence.
He recalled that a cross-section of Nigerians during the week called for Matawalle’s sack over an old video some took as expressing sympathy to bandits.
The video, recorded by Channels TV in 2021, captured Matawalle, who was then the Governor of Zamfara State, commenting on insecurity issues in the state.
Matawalle made the comment at the State House, Abuja, after meeting with then President Muhammadu Buhari.
While answering questions from journalists on the activities of bandits in Zamfara State, Matawalle said, “Not all of them are criminals.”
Dr. Shinkafi, who is also the Executive Director, Patriots for Peace and Social Development, however urged President Tinubu to investigate the Minister over the video, describing both Mohammed Badaru and Matawalle as the worst appointments in the history of the Ministry of Defence and the biggest mistakes by President Tinubu.
“Gen. Musa is the right man for the job at this critical stage in the fight against terrorism, insurgency, banditry, militancy, secession, and kidnapping for ransom.
“The need for a leader with a military background to head the Ministry of Defence cannot be overemphasized. It was a mistake Mr. President made in appointing Badaru Abubakar, a chartered accountant, as Minister of Defence, and Matawalle, who has only a certificate from a vocational training centre below senior secondary school level, according to the resume he submitted to the National Assembly for ministerial screening in 2023.
“Their lack of experience in complex security issues has grossly affected the fight against terrorism, national security, and order.
“More importantly, the interview Bello Matawalle granted a television correspondent as then Governor of Zamfara State, in which he said that ‘not all bandits are criminals,’ which has gone viral on social media, depicts him as a bandit sympathizer and incapable of combating them.
“Furthermore, the new Minister of Defence, General Musa, served under Bello Matawalle, Minister of State for Defence, as Chief of Defence Staff. It would be inappropriate for Matawalle to remain in office under Musa to avoid personality clashes,” Shinkafi said.
He said that Gen. Musa, as a distinguished military officer, should be given a free hand to reorganize and reposition the Ministry of Defence for the tasks ahead and that there should be no sentiment or partisan politics in overhauling the security architecture during this period of a state of emergency on security.
He said, “Accordingly, I call for the immediate sack of Bello Matawalle as Minister of State for Defence. His tenure is a sad commentary on the fight against terrorism. Like the former Minister of Defence Mohammed Badaru, who voluntarily resigned, Matawalle should also honourably resign or be sacked. National security supersedes political interests. The whole world is watching us.
“I equally demand the immediate scrapping of the office of Minister of State for Defence. It is unnecessary and an aberration in military command.
“Under serious national defence architecture, the command system is not split like it is in the country. Nigeria is currently operating a system in which the senior minister does not have control of the maritime domain, which is very critical to our economy and national security, because it is handed over to the Minister of State for Defence to oversee.”
Shinkafi said that the national acceptance of Gen. Christopher Musa is a testament to his qualification for the job, just as the outcry for the sack of Bello Matawalle as Minister of State for Defence reflects his poor performance and lack of military experience in discharging this crucial national duty.
He urged Nigerians to support President Tinubu, Gen. Musa and security agencies in the quest for national security, safety, unity and prosperity.
