The Chairman of state Chairmen forum of the Social Democratic Party (SDP,) Femi Olaniyi Ferrari, has called for credible elections, people-centred governance and national unity as Nigeria marks the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
He made the call on Friday in a message commemorating the June 12 anniversary, in Abuja.
Ferrari described the June 12, 1993 presidential election as a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic history and a symbol of the people’s determination to shape their future through the ballot.
According to him, June 12 was more than an election, but a covenant between leaders and citizens founded on justice, accountability and service to the people.
The statement maintains that the party remains committed to the ideals that defined the June 12 struggle, including social justice, equity and democratic governance.
He said that honouring the sacrifices of June 12 heroes requires more than remembrance, stressing that practical steps must be taken to strengthen democracy and improve the welfare of citizens.
He described credible elections as a key priority, noting that the sacrifices made during the June 12 struggle demand an electoral process that truly reflects the will of the people.
Ferrari who is the Lagos SDP chairman advocated for policies aimed at reducing poverty, creating jobs, improving healthcare delivery and expanding access to quality education.
He urged leaders at all levels to embrace governance that places the needs and aspirations of ordinary Nigerians at the centre of public policy.
Addressing young Nigerians, he encourages them to participate actively in the democratic process and remain committed to using their votes to shape the country’s future.
He expressed confidence that Nigeria can achieve the vision championed by the late MKO Abiola through integrity, service and responsible leadership.
He pledged that the Lagos chapter of the party will continue to promote the ideals of June 12 through constructive engagement and people-oriented policies.
He prayed for the repose of the souls of MKO Abiola and other heroes of democracy, while urging Nigerians to preserve and strengthen the democratic gains achieved over the years.
