The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, has said the Commission’s immediate priority is on the forthcoming Osun State governorship election and preparations for future nationwide electoral activities.
He said this on Wednesday when he received a congratulatory visit from the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria SANs resident on the Plateau.
The delegation, led by Pius A. Akubo, SAN, paid a courtesy visit to Prof. Amupitan at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja to congratulate him on his appointment.
Presenting a congratulatory card on behalf of the Plateau SANs, Akubo described Prof. Amupitan’s appointment as a “historic milestone” for the North-Central region and Nigeria’s democracy, and prayed for God’s guidance and protection over the new INEC Chairman as he leads the nation’s electoral body.
Responding, Prof. Amupitan expressed appreciation for the visit, describing the Plateau SANs as family and recalling his professional roots with the vibrant legal community in Plateau State.
He also paid glowing tributes to the late senior advocates from the state, whose passing, he said, was a painful loss to the legal profession.
Looking ahead, Prof. Amupitan said INEC is focused on the forthcoming Osun State governorship election and preparations for future nationwide electoral activities.
He appealed to Nigerians, particularly members of the legal profession, to continue praying for and supporting the Commission as it carries out its constitutional mandate.
Amupitan also commended his National Commissioners, the Secretary to the Commission, directors and technical aides for their unwavering support, describing them as the “generals” behind the success of recent elections.
